What counts as a lighthouse
An existing building that was not housing — an office, a church, a school, barracks, a hospital, a factory or a store — converted into homes, or into mixed use that includes homes. A project counts as under way only once building work has started, never on a permit or an announcement. And it stands out for at least one reason: the homes are owned by a cooperative or the community, it found a new way to finance or own the homes, the homes are affordable, it saves embodied carbon, or an award or public programme has recognised it. We found them in local news, council records and award lists, and every fact on a project's page carries its source. See also Turning empty offices into homes.
