The Barre Cassan project is a major rehabilitation of the former Cassan F teaching and laboratory building on the Jussieu campus in Paris’s 5th arrondissement. The building, constructed between 1958 and 1961, is being converted into student and researcher housing and shared facilities. The project’s developer is RIVP, working with Sorbonne Université and other partners; the available project information does not specify a founding date for the project.21
The programme provides 581 student and student-researcher homes, ranging from studios to larger shared apartments, across nearly 15,000 square metres. The future residence is intended for the CROUS de Paris. Other planned facilities include a sorting centre for Sorbonne Université, Maison Étudiante association rooms for activities such as radio, filming, dance and music, and a multipurpose events room.21
The building had housed teaching rooms and chemistry laboratories until 2017. RIVP’s plans include preparatory pollution removal and clearance, followed by the rehabilitation works; the stated schedule anticipates construction starting in 2025 and delivery in 2030.2 The architecture team is Agence Charles-Henri Tachon Architecture et Paysage, associated with Abinal&Ropars. Financing is listed from the City of Paris and the French State.2
RIVP and its partners marked the project’s launch on 25 August 2025. Those present included RIVP president David Belliard and managing director Christine Laconde, as well as Paris deputy mayors Jacques Baudrier and Marie-Christine Lemardeley.1
