PARAGON Apartments is a completed residential development in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, Germany. Designed by Berlin-based architecture practice GRAFT, the project was built between 2013 and 2016 and covers approximately 25,100 square metres. Trockland Management GmbH was the client and developer.23
The scheme transformed a former hospital site between Danziger Straße and Fröbelplatz. Its principal existing building was originally constructed as a school in 1912; the project retained and adapted existing structures while adding two new buildings, one along Danziger Straße and another facing Fröbelplatz.23 The resulting development includes 217 rental apartments, a kindergarten, a café and an organic supermarket.2
GRAFT’s design brings together the existing buildings and new construction around three shared courtyards. The architects also used a repeatable two-room apartment module of 37.5 square metres, which could be combined to form larger homes.2 Project leadership included GRAFT’s founding partners Lars Krückeberg, Wolfram Putz and Thomas Willemeit.2
In 2017, PARAGON Apartments was selected as one of 33 nominees for the Deutscher Bauherrenpreis 2018, from 173 submitted projects. The nomination described it as the conversion of a hospital for inner-city housing.19
