The Baumannkerk project converted the former Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Altijddurende Bijstand church into 33 apartments in Overschie, a district of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The homes have been completed and handed over. Van Wijnen carried out the transformation; the project page identifies RO-OK as the client and HOYT Architecten & Bouwmanagers as the architect. 1
RO-OK acquired the church in 2018 and led its redevelopment, with HOYT designing the conversion. The building was constructed in 1953 to a design by Rotterdam architect J.P.L. Hendriks. 89 Construction was expected to start in summer 2020, and the apartments came into use in spring 2022. 78
The design retained the character of the former church while adapting it for residential use. Original features, including characteristic brickwork and stained-glass windows, were incorporated into the apartments; the project page describes each home as distinct, with some containing original church elements. 1 The church’s asymmetric bell tower and forecourt remain part of its presence on Burgemeester Baumannlaan. 1 Architect Joris van Hoytema said the design aim was to keep the church as intact as possible and bring a sense of its character into each apartment. 1
The conversion adds housing through the reuse of an existing building. The project also included a café and a shop, alongside the 33 apartments. 8 The project’s developers are identified as RO-OK, with Bart Verhagen and Gijs van der Kleij named in a project account. 3
