Hochbergerstrasse 158 in Basel-Kleinhüningen housed the canton's Office for Environment and Energy (Amt für Umwelt und Energie) until the end of 2021. Instead of demolishing it, the Canton of Basel-Stadt stripped the office building back to its structural shell and converted it into 28 affordable flats under its housing programme "Wohnbauprogramm 1000+". The flats are reached by an access gallery with large glazed sliding doors; the building also has a ground-floor community room, commercial units for co-working, offices or small workshops, a usable basement, a roof terrace and three guest rooms for visiting musicians. The design came from an anonymous open competition, won unanimously in 2020 by Kooperative E 45 (Bettina Satzl), with construction management by Eitel & Partner. The association tonRaum, chosen by tender, runs the shared and commercial spaces, including affordable rehearsal and work rooms for musicians. Construction ran from 2022 to 2025 and the building was ready for occupation in September 2025; it is listed for the REAR Award 2026.
