FUNARI 818 is a completed housing conversion at Robert-Funari-Straße in Mannheim, Germany. IMMPRINZIP GmbH & Co. KG developed and carried out the conversion of former military accommodation building 818 in the Funari quarter of the FRANKLIN district. The building is a four-storey structure dating from the 1930s. 134
The project created 38 apartments, ranging from approximately 43 to 118 square metres. Thirty-two of the units are designated as subsidised housing, and the project provides homes for different resident groups. The apartments include a mix of layouts and features such as high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, balconies, loggias and terraces. 13
Construction began in March 2021 and took 16 months, according to the project record. The converted building meets the KfW-55 energy-efficiency standard and is supplied by Mannheim’s district-heating network. The project also retained and reused the roof tiles, incorporating an approach focused on reusing materials and reducing the need to replace existing building components. 3
FUNARI 818 forms part of the broader redevelopment of FRANKLIN, a former US military site in northeast Mannheim. Development of the area began in 2015; the project page describes a 1.44-million-square-metre district planned for more than 9,000 residents. 1 The available sources do not state a founding date for either FUNARI 818 or its developer. 13
