Zukunftsquartier Sackring is a proposed long-term redevelopment of the Sackringviertel, a Braunschweig neighbourhood where the Braunschweiger Baugenossenschaft (BBG) manages more than 1,200 homes. The BBG is the project’s developer; it prepared the urban design together with the City of Braunschweig and the Institute for Urban Planning and Design Methodology. 1
The plans respond to concerns that the existing housing and neighbourhood do not fully meet current needs for accessibility, climate protection and energy efficiency. They propose replacing the small, comb-like buildings with a continuous building frontage along Sackring, alongside park-like areas where hard surfaces are removed. The design also includes measures to provide shade, prepare for heat and heavy rain, and support biodiversity through new habitats. 1
The project is planned in stages, beginning with a development-plan procedure. Demolition could follow, with construction and completion intended to take place gradually over an extended period, subject to the process proceeding largely as expected. The project page does not give a completion date. 1
The BBG says members will receive at least two years’ notice before any necessary move and individual offers of alternative housing in the neighbourhood, with the aim of enabling them to stay. The plans also include publicly subsidised affordable homes in the new development. Member information meetings have begun, and further meetings are planned regularly. 1
