Strijp-S is a neighbourhood and former industrial site in the Strijp district of Eindhoven, in the Netherlands. Once owned by Philips, the site has been redeveloped since the early 2000s into a mixed-use urban area. Its current activities include housing, workplaces, creative businesses, cultural facilities and public spaces. 2
Philips’ industrial presence began in 1916, when Anton Philips had a glass factory built there to make glass bulbs for lamps. The site later became a major production location for radios, televisions and other products. 34 As Philips withdrew from Eindhoven during the 1990s, plans emerged to find new uses for the industrial area. 411
The principal redevelopment vehicle is Park Strijp Beheer, a public-private partnership established by the municipality of Eindhoven and VolkerWessels after the site was sold in 2002. The partnership’s stated objective was to transform Strijp-S into a creative centre for Eindhoven. 24 The broader development is a joint initiative involving the municipality, VolkerWessels, SDK Vastgoed and housing associations Trudo and Woonbedrijf; VolkerWessels remains involved as developer and builder. 2
The plan is for a mixed urban district combining homes, work and public functions. Existing industrial buildings have been reused for homes, studios, workspaces and other activities, alongside new construction. 211 The first permanent residents arrived in 2012, and former factory buildings were subsequently converted for residential use. 4 The area’s role as a place for creative and technology businesses, cultural activity and everyday neighbourhood life continues to develop. 9
