Mittendrin in Cronenberg is a cooperative, multigenerational housing project in Cronenberg, a district of Wuppertal, Germany. It is being developed under the umbrella of Ko-Operativ eG NRW, a housing-project cooperative founded on 28 October 2016; the cooperative’s role includes legal responsibility for matters shared across its projects.11112
The project reuses a site of about 1,800 square metres in Cronenberg’s centre. Plans call for a new residential building on the remaining base of a former supermarket and the substantial renovation of a historic, slate-clad building on the main street. The scheme includes 16 homes of different sizes, a shared room, garden, roof terrace and hobby spaces. The project page describes low-energy and solar technology, step-free access to the apartments, and parking for 10 cars in an underground garage.1
The intended community is open to people of different ages and household types, including single residents, couples and families. The project also welcomes people with disabilities and those seeking publicly supported housing. Its stated aim is to combine shared activities and mutual support with residents’ privacy and personal space.1
The development grew out of a local project group, which joined Ko-Operativ eG NRW to realise the scheme. The group purchased the property, received a positive decision on its preliminary planning application and submitted a building application; demolition of the former supermarket addition has taken place.16 The project page says renovation and new construction are due to begin shortly, but does not provide a founding date for the local project or name its individual initiators.1
