Hommeldorp is a resident-led housing cooperative based in Utrecht, founded in 2023. It was started by five people aged 25 to 30 who wanted to continue living communally after student life and contribute to a more accessible and inclusive city. The initiative has since grown to a group of 11 people. Sam Thomassen is identified as a co-initiator and chair.36
The cooperative’s project is a planned housing community in Leidsche Rijn, Utrecht. Hommeldorp’s stated vision describes 37 households, arranged in clusters of four to eight homes that share an additional communal kitchen. The group’s aims include affordable, sustainable rental housing and spaces for shared activities and creative projects. Its stated values are sustainability, diversity, neighbourhood connection, creativity and affordability.
Hommeldorp is the selected cooperative for a site on Chisinaustraat, in Leidsche Rijn Centrum-Oost, where it is developing plans for the homes. The municipality describes the project as a cooperative-led development and reports that Hommeldorp was selected after competing groups submitted proposals. Its project page currently describes a plan for 33 homes, while Hommeldorp’s own project description gives a wider vision of 37 households.2
The cooperative, rather than a named commercial developer, is leading the resident-led project. Its activities include developing the housing proposal and building a future community; the homes have not yet been built. The municipality lists construction as planned for June 2028 to September 2029. 23
