Hiedanranta is a former industrial area being transformed into a new district and western centre of Tampere, Finland, by the lakeside and alongside a tram line. The City of Tampere bought the former factory site in 2014, and opened the area to residents in 2016 as planning began with an international design competition.1087
The development company Hiedanrannan Kehitys Oy, established by the City of Tampere, owns the former factory site and is responsible for developing it into a new urban district. The company works with the city’s planning department, the Hiedanranta development programme and other landowners.45 The project includes residential development, transport links, services and public spaces, alongside the reuse of former factory buildings for cultural and other activities.411
The district is planned for approximately 20,000 residents. Its development is intended to account for climate considerations, public transport, community life and equality; the city describes Hiedanranta as Finland’s first environmentally certified district.4 The former factory buildings are being renovated for new uses, with Tehdas intended as a centre for cultural activity and creative businesses.4 Hiedanranta’s master plan was adopted in 2020, and the first residents were expected to move in from August 2026, according to the City of Tampere’s project information.84
