Garagenaufstockungen Rintheimer Feld is a housing project by municipal housing company Volkswohnung GmbH in Karlsruhe, Germany. It adds homes above three existing garage courts in the Rintheimer Feld, a post-war residential neighbourhood, using land that was already built on while keeping the garages in use.235
The project grew from an idea by Karlsruhe architect Dr. Falk Schneemann, whose proposal won a city ideas competition in 2017. Volkswohnung commissioned further study and developed the scheme with Schneemann’s practice, Falk Schneemann Architektur.34 Construction began in 2022, and the homes were completed in 2023.23
The development created 12 rental homes—nine one-room apartments, two two-room flats and one three-room flat—with a total of 536 square metres of living space. Most are publicly subsidised; the original plans identified students and single parents as intended residents.48 The homes use prefabricated timber construction and connect to existing water, energy and telecommunications infrastructure. Their components are designed to be dismantled and reused, and some reused materials, including floors, doors and letterboxes, came from a Volkswohnung demolition project.25
In 2026, the project received first place in the German Construction Award’s “Circular Construction” category.25 It was also supported by Baden-Württemberg’s “Innovativ Wohnen” programme.48
