Stefano Boeri Architetti is an architecture and urban planning practice based in Milan, Italy, established in 1993 and adopting its current name in 2011 after originally operating as Boeri Studio. The practice was founded by Stefano Boeri, later joined by current partners Francesca Cesa Bianchi, Marco Giorgio, and Pietro Chiodi. The office maintains international branches in Shanghai and Tirana.
The studio became prominent for its pioneering work in integrating vegetation with architecture, most notably through the Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest) in Milan’s Porta Nuova district. Completed in 2014, the Bosco Verticale consists of two residential towers, 110 and 76 meters high, featuring around 800 trees, 4,500 shrubs, and 20,000 plants from approximately 100 species—a concentration equivalent to five hectares of forest condensed onto a 1,000-square-meter footprint. This project introduced a new model of urban forestry, with the towers designed to enhance urban biodiversity, absorb CO₂, suppress noise pollution, and improve air quality and microclimate.
Stefano Boeri Architetti’s activities extend across architecture, urban planning, interior, and product design, with a strong emphasis on the environmental and geopolitical dimensions of urban development. The studio has replicated the Vertical Forest concept globally, adapting it to local climates and functions—for example, in Nanjing, Eindhoven (for social housing), and Utrecht, contributing to urban reforestation and sustainable city living.
The Milan headquarters comprises around 30 architects, working on multidisciplinary projects that intersect ecology and metropolitan life. The office’s work has received global recognition, including awards for innovation and sustainable high-rise architecture.
