The International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) is an independent cultural institution focused on knowledge and design. Based in Rotterdam, it examines how design can help address major spatial, societal and ecological challenges, and contributes to architectural discussion in the Netherlands and internationally.21
IABR was founded in 2001, and its first biennale took place in 2003. The initiative came from Kristin Feireiss, then director of the Netherlands Architecture Institute; architect Francine Houben curated the first edition, which focused on mobility.47 Since that first edition, IABR has brought together designers, researchers, public authorities, knowledge institutions, civil society organisations and members of the public to develop perspectives on the future living environment.2
The biennale is held every two years and includes exhibitions, debates, lectures, workshops and guided tours. Between editions, IABR continues its research, collaborations and public debate, and makes research outcomes available through formats including text, images, podcasts and exhibitions.1 Its 2026 edition, SYSTEMS OF SUPPORT, is scheduled for September 18 to November 29 at the Piekfabriek in Rotterdam; the programme combines an exhibition, public events and collaborations with partners.1
Saskia van Stein is IABR’s artistic and general director, and Silvie Dees is its managing director.8 The organisation’s registered contact address is Keilestraat 9 K1, Rotterdam.2
