HouseEurope! is a Berlin-based non-profit organization, registered as a gGmbH at Am Wasserwerk 22F in the city's Lichtenberg district. Co-initiated by architect Arno Brandlhuber of studio b+ and ETH Zurich's station.plus research platform, along with Ludwig Engel, Olaf Grawert, and Alina Kolar, it operates as a policy lab focused on the built environment.
The group grew from efforts to preserve Berlin's brutalist Mäusebunker, facing demolition due to renovation costs exceeding land value. It spearheaded the European Citizens' Initiative "Power to Renovation," concluded on January 31, 2026, after collecting signatures toward a one-million threshold from at least seven EU states. The proposal sought a "right to reuse" via tax relief on renovations and reused materials, fair assessments valuing buildings' potential over risks, and accounting for embedded CO2 in existing structures—urged by projections of two billion square meters demolished by 2050.
HouseEurope! built a community of over 80,000 supporters and 250 partners, producing films like "The Demolition Drama," a renovation atlas of European examples, touring exhibitions such as "FIX IT! Umbau statt Abriss," and events including the 2024 HouseEurope! Assembly at Tempelhof. It received the 2025 Obel Award for advancing adaptive reuse as social and ecological policy.
