Agentur StadtWohnen Chemnitz is a counselling project of the City of Chemnitz, run by the Westsächsische Gesellschaft für Stadterneuerung mbH (WGS). The project was established in 2006 and has been managed by WGS since September 2011. 412
Its work centres on bringing vacant, deteriorating historic buildings—particularly Gründerzeit housing in Chemnitz’s inner-city districts—back into use. The agency advises owners of empty or dilapidated properties, prospective investors and people interested in shared housing or other creative reuse of buildings. 23 It acts as a coordination point, connecting owners with potential users, investors and relevant public bodies, and provides advice on options for renovation and reuse. 257
Problem properties are a particular focus. The agency’s own 2020 notice described them as a major challenge for Chemnitz and other cities, especially in older neighbourhoods, and said its work complements the formal tools available to the city. 13 The notice also highlighted two Chemnitz properties featured in a federal guide to problem properties: Hainstraße 92 and Hofer Straße 23, which had since been renovated or secured. 13
The agency’s main office is at WGS, Weststraße 49, Chemnitz. Its named contacts include project lead Dipl.-Ing. Martin Neubert and adviser Sabine Hausmann. 24 Its activities are focused on Chemnitz; the city’s information says the agency extended its work to the Zwickauer Straße area in spring 2024. 11
