York-Quartier is a mixed-use district being developed on the former York Barracks in Gremmendorf, Münster, Germany. The barracks were built in the 1930s and remained in military use until the British forces withdrew in 2012; the site is about five kilometres from central Münster. 3
The City of Münster established KonvOY GmbH in 2018 to manage the conversion of the former York and Oxford barracks sites. KonvOY is the principal landowner until building plots are marketed and allocated, and coordinates the York district’s development with city departments and other partners. 32 The project team includes managing director Stephan Aumann and York project lead Claudia Carl. 2
The planned district covers 500,000 square metres, including about 300,000 square metres of residential and commercial space, approximately 130,000 square metres of green space and 70,000 square metres of transport space. Plans call for around 1,800 homes, intended to accommodate about 6,000 residents, alongside offices, commercial premises and social infrastructure. 43 The official project site lists facilities and amenities including schools, childcare centres, community spaces, parks, sports and play areas, and mobility stations. 4
Housing is intended to include different forms of provision, such as homes for multiple generations and publicly subsidised rental housing. The development is being built in phases, with plots allocated through public concept-based processes intended to encourage a varied mix of housing, services and businesses. The project site gives 2030 as the expected completion date for the overall district. 41
