Stadtentwicklung Haunstetten Südwest is a long-term urban-planning project led by the City of Augsburg to create a new urban quarter adjoining the existing Haunstetten district, rather than a separate town. The planned area covers about 200 hectares in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany, roughly seven kilometres from the city centre and close to the neighbouring city of Königsbrunn. 34911
The city’s stated aims are to provide homes for at least 10,000 residents and workplaces for at least 5,000 people, with planning guided by the idea of a “city of short distances.” 4 The project involves preparing a framework plan for the whole area, including urban form, open spaces, transport, energy and sustainability, infrastructure and rainwater management. 3 A 2018–2020 urban-design and landscape-planning competition, which included public participation, established initial design ideas for the quarter. 410
The City of Augsburg is the project’s public-sector developer and planning authority; a large share of the site is privately owned, and the city has adopted a pre-emption-rights statute with the stated aim of increasing its land ownership. 412 The city’s foundational council decisions to develop a comprehensive concept for Haunstetten Südwest date to 2016 and 2017. 12 In March 2024, the city awarded further planning work to a team led by Vienna-based Albert Wimmer ZT GmbH. 23 The five-firm team covers urban design and architecture, open-space planning, transport, energy and sustainability, and rainwater management. 3
The framework plan is still being developed and covers the full planning area, with implementation expected to take place over a long period. 3 In 2022, the city council also initiated preliminary investigations for the area and approved a pre-emption-rights statute. 2
