MultipleXity is a municipal project to convert the former tram depot on Take Ionescu Boulevard in Timișoara, Romania, into a cultural, creative and educational centre focused on art, technology and experimentation.2 The developer is Timișoara City Hall, working in partnership with the Municipality of Timișoara’s Project Centre.26
The project’s origins lie in Timișoara’s cultural strategy and its European Capital of Culture bid: MultipleXity was included in the city’s cultural planning from 2014.8 In March 2026, Mayor Dominic Fritz signed a European funding agreement with the West Regional Development Agency for the project.2 The reported total investment is 148.8 million lei, including 68 million lei in European funding and 81 million lei from the local budget.2
The redevelopment is planned in two main parts. One covers restoration of the large former depot hall and the creation of an immersive space; the other concerns adjacent buildings and the outdoor courtyard.24 The buildings are intended to accommodate co-working space for creative industries, a public bistro and artist residencies, with six accommodation units for resident artists, including one accessible unit.2 The courtyard, around 9,000 square metres according to the article, is planned as a public area for cultural events, including concerts, exhibitions and projections on building façades.2
The plans also call for retaining elements of the site’s industrial heritage, including original tram rails, and for applying New European Bauhaus principles related to sustainability, inclusion and accessibility.23 The available sources describe the project’s development and planned facilities; they do not give a founding date for a separate operating organisation.
