Lieu Commun is a participatory social-rental housing project in Strasbourg, France, developed by the social housing cooperative Habitat de l’Ill in partnership with the residents’ association Lieu Commun, architecture cooperative ArchiEthic, Natura Concept and the Eurométropole de Strasbourg.2 The building is at 16 impasse Quinta Florentina in the Poteries district, on the final phase of the ZAC des Poteries.2
The project brought residents into the design and shared management of their housing. The association’s president, Véronique Brom, described the project as having begun five years before the residence’s 2018 inauguration.2 Residents took part in design workshops with architect Thomas Huguen of ArchiEthic; a report on the project says many of the future tenants attended more than 30 workshops.23
The building, delivered on 24 April 2018 and inaugurated on 10 September that year, contains 15 social-rental homes.2 The homes have 1,012 m² of living area, alongside 82 m² of shared space, including a common room, laundry, workshop and outdoor areas.2 These facilities are intended to support neighbourly contact and everyday mutual aid, while being collectively managed by residents.2
At the inauguration, Habitat de l’Ill president Emmanuel Bachmann presented the project as part of the cooperative’s efforts, underway since 2011, to involve tenants and prospective owners in shaping their places of residence.2 Strasbourg officials and regional representatives also highlighted the project’s role in participatory social housing; the regional council provided financial support.2 In May 2018, the project received a “Trophée des opérations remarquables” from the Fédération des Coop’HLM.2
