Knarrenhof Den Haag is a proposed intergenerational housing project in The Hague, the Netherlands. The local initiative group seeks to establish one or more Knarrenhof communities on behalf of more than 600 people registered as interested. The proposal adapts the Knarrenhof concept to The Hague and is intended for older residents as well as younger people, including starters and students.1
The project is being advanced by Initiatiefgroep Knarrenhof Den Haag, with support from Knarrenhof Nederland. The current initiative group took up the effort in November 2022, after an earlier municipal motion in 2021 did not lead to progress. The local group’s work includes proposing ideas to political parties and the municipal government, looking for possible sites, holding quarterly progress meetings with the municipality, and informing residents about the concept.1 Its published proposal envisages 25–45 homes, combining social rent and affordable ownership, with shared indoor and outdoor spaces. The intended community would encourage residents to help one another while living independently.14
The Hague city council unanimously adopted the “Realiseer Knarrenhof” motion on 4 April 2024, asking the municipality to search with Stichting Knarrenhof for a suitable site for intergenerational group housing.2 In 2024, the municipality said it would examine municipal land and property, cooperation with housing associations, and other development areas.
