The Klimaschutzsiedlung Am Wasserturm is a residential development in Mönchengladbach, Germany, built on a former industrial site near the city centre and the city’s water tower. GeWoGe 1897 eG, the Gemeinnützige Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft von 1897, developed the project with Mönchengladbach-based BRINGSARCHITEKTEN GmbH & Co. KG. 25
The project was planned in five construction phases. Its first phase was occupied in July 2015; the final phase was completed in 2022, bringing the development to 11 residential buildings and 81 cooperative rental apartments. 128 Apartments range from 37 to 115 square metres, with a mix that includes apartments and penthouses. 15
North Rhine-Westphalia recognised the development as a “Klimaschutzsiedlung” for its energy performance and urban and architectural standards. 12 The project’s features include heating supplied from renewable raw materials, a stated “3-litre standard” for low energy use, triple-glazed windows, insulated building envelopes, and ventilation systems with heat recovery. 1 The site is within walking distance of the pedestrian zone and has nearby bus access and everyday services. 1
GeWoGe 1897 traces its roots to the Spar- und Bauverein eGmbH zu M.Gladbach, founded on 14 March 1897. 57 In addition to this development, the cooperative builds and manages housing. 7
