The Former Bürgerhospital ward building is a conversion project by the Stuttgarter Wohnungs- und Städtebaugesellschaft mbH (SWSG), the project’s developer. It transformed the former hospital’s nine-storey ward building on Tunzhofer Straße in Stuttgart-Nord into housing and community facilities. The SWSG developed the plan after the hospital site ceased operating, with the aim of creating affordable homes while retaining the building’s historic character. 1
Completed and occupied in summer 2024, the conversion created 136 apartments. Three are privately financed; the other 133 are publicly subsidised, and half of those are allocated through indirect occupancy arrangements. Twenty apartments are designed to be accessible and suitable for wheelchair users. 1
The building also contains a six-group childcare centre and a family centre on two floors with direct access from outside. A community garden is included in the project’s facilities. 1 Rather than demolish the structure, the SWSG retained elements including the distinctive wave-shaped roof, the main staircase and several wall reliefs. The company said this approach also saved embodied energy. 1
Two SWSG staff members quoted in the project announcement were Christian End, head of Existing Properties Management, Central, and Frank Riethmüller, head of Existing Buildings Construction Management. End spoke about welcoming residents and adding housing in Stuttgart; Riethmüller described preserving the building’s historic appearance. 1 The source gives the completion date but does not state a project founding date. 1
