Abante Jubilar Sevilla is a senior cohousing project in Mairena del Aljarafe, in the province of Seville, Spain. It is promoted and developed by Abante Jubilar Sevilla S. Coop. And., a consumer cooperative created to establish a long-term, community-based alternative to conventional elderly housing.12
The project originated with a group of friends approaching retirement who began exploring how they wanted to organise their future living arrangements. One founding member visited the Trabensol cohousing project in Torremocha del Jarama, Madrid, in 2014, followed by a 2016 information meeting in Seville attended by more than 50 people. A six-person initial working group emerged from that meeting.2 The cooperative was registered in the Andalusian Cooperative Register in February 2020, in Mairena del Aljarafe.2
The planned development occupies a plot of approximately 4,500 square metres; the architectural project records the site area as 4,637.80 square metres.13 It comprises 26 private, accessible residential units, intended for use under a cooperative right-of-use arrangement, together with shared facilities.34 These facilities are planned to include a kitchen, dining room, workshops, library, vegetable garden and laundry.4 The architectural project is attributed to MMN Arquitectos, with the project period stated as 2024–2025.3
The cooperative’s activities cover the collective planning, financing, governance and future management of the community. Its model is based on self-management, mutual support, co-care and self-care, participation, sustainability and integration with the surrounding community.1 The project also follows the Person-Centred Care model, emphasising residents’ autonomy and continued responsibility for their individual life plans.1 The site is near Mairena del Aljarafe’s historic centre and within walking distance of the town hall, cultural facilities and a sports complex.6
