The Wohnungsgenossenschaft Marzahner Tor eG, based in Berlin-Marzahn, originated on June 17, 1979, as the Arbeiterwohnungsbaugenossenschaft, initiated by the state-owned VEB Elektroprojekt und Anlagebau Berlin. It built around 5,500 apartments to house about 1,000 workers and their families under DDR standards, focusing on maintenance through in-house crafts and caretakers. In 1990, post-reunification, it registered as a non-profit cooperative, managing properties mainly from 1979-1982.
Today, it administers 4,521 apartments, seven guest units, 27 commercial spaces, and 756 parking spots across Berlin's northeast, including eight townhouses with 62 units in Blumberg. With 5,270 members and 31 employees as of recent records, its 2022 investments reached 6.3 million euros, including major heating upgrades in Franz-Stenzer-Straße. Vacancy stood at 0.86%, with tenant turnover at 4.5%.
Recent activities include a 2017 new-build of 62 units selected via neighborhood concept submissions, drawing 600 applicants from Berlin and Europe. In 2023, it co-founded StadtWatt eG, an energy cooperative with 20 others and BürgerEnergie Berlin, to provide sustainable power amid rising costs. Modernization emphasizes energy efficiency, barrier-free access, and community events like Wohnfühltreffs.
