Wohnungsgenossenschaft Essen-Nord eG is a member-owned housing cooperative based in Essen, Germany. Founded on 2 March 1914, it grew from a housing initiative in Essen-West; the present organisation was formed through the merger of several local housing cooperatives. 15 Its membership owns the cooperative collectively and participates in decisions about its development. 1
As of 31 December 2025, Essen-Nord reported about 5,100 members and 3,600 homes. 1 It provides housing in Essen, Düsseldorf, Ratingen, Dortmund and Dülmen, offering homes ranging from studio apartments to single-family houses. Its portfolio includes older buildings and new construction; most homes are privately financed, alongside publicly financed housing. 1
The cooperative develops land and housing projects as well as managing its existing stock. Its activities include new construction and energy-efficiency upgrades, intended to respond to current housing needs and maintain homes for future generations. 1 It also supports social and cultural life in the neighbourhoods where it operates, through resident events, community activities, charitable fundraising and social services, among other initiatives. 1
The organisation’s leadership has included Juan-Carlos Pulido, chair of the board since 2015, and Andreas Dargegen, a board member since 2016. 1 Its website reported in 2026 that Sascha Schumacher had joined the board as technical director from 1 September, succeeding Dargegen. 3
