Wohnungsgenossenschaft Aufbau Dresden eG is a member-owned housing cooperative based in Dresden, Germany. Its stated purpose is to provide members with good, secure and socially responsible housing. The cooperative manages a stock of approximately 17,000 homes, making it one of Germany’s largest housing cooperatives. 15
Its homes are located in central Dresden, between the River Elbe and the Großer Garten, and in the eastern part of the city. Membership provides a lifelong right of residence, according to the organisation’s website. The cooperative also operates meeting places and family centres that contribute to community and cultural life. 1
The organisation traces its origins to the founding of the Arbeiter-Wohnungsbau-Genossenschaft “Aufbau Dresden” on 4 April 1954 at VEB Sachsenwerk Niedersedlitz. Several smaller cooperatives later joined to form the larger “Groß-AWG Aufbau” in 1959. 10 The cooperative’s current leadership comprises board spokesperson Andy Klyscz and board member Claudia Thurm; Frank Wustmann chairs its supervisory board. 2
Its activities centre on member housing and property management. The cooperative’s statutes also allow it to build, acquire, sell and manage buildings in different legal and use forms, and to take on related tasks in housing, real estate, urban development and infrastructure. 48 Its registered office and main business address are at Henzestraße 14 in Dresden. 28
