Wohnbaugenossenschaft “Fortschritt” is a housing cooperative established in 1911 and based in Vienna, Austria, with its primary focus on the construction, modernization, and maintenance of affordable residential properties for its members. The organisation operates primarily in Vienna and Lower Austria. As of today, Fortschritt manages over 4,600 apartments and houses, positioning it among the more established cooperatives in the region.
The cooperative’s activities span new construction projects, the ongoing upkeep of existing housing stock, and targeted modernization efforts such as upgrading heating systems or improving accessibility in older buildings. Its portfolio includes multi-storey apartment blocks as well as terraced and single-family homes. Fortschritt’s projects are distributed across numerous locations, including Vienna districts such as Floridsdorf and Donaustadt, as well as towns in Lower Austria like Korneuburg and Schwechat.
Current projects include the completion of new apartments on Föhrenschofenstraße in Vienna-Donaustadt, where the focus is on energy-efficient construction and providing family-friendly living spaces. Ongoing renovation and modernization work is also being undertaken in older buildings, notably improving insulation and building envelope, and replacing aging elevators.
Membership in Fortschritt is open to all Austrian residents willing to contribute to the cooperative’s share capital. The cooperative model gives residents a degree of long-term security, but only allocates flats to members, and does not allow property speculation. Fortschritt’s long-standing presence in the Vienna housing sector reflects its stable, member-oriented approach, with an emphasis on maintaining quality and affordability over time.
