Witton Lodge Community Association (WLCA) is a resident-founded community association and landlord based in Perry Common, Birmingham. Local residents established it in 1994 in response to plans to demolish the Perry Common estate, with the aim of keeping residents involved in decisions as the old estate was cleared and rebuilt.37
WLCA provides social and affordable housing and supports community-led development. Its housing and asset-development subsidiary, Witton Lodge Community Homes (WLCH), was established in 2017 to pursue these activities. WLCH works with Birmingham City Council and other partners to bring empty properties back into use and explore new-build opportunities, including affordable housing.4 The association has reported a rental portfolio of more than 200 properties.34
The association’s work also extends beyond housing. Its activities include support with jobs and skills, environmental projects, health and wellbeing initiatives, and community events.211 Its work is focused on Perry Common, Erdington and wider North Birmingham, where it works with local residents and partner organisations.48 Chief Officer Afzal Hussain has led the organisation since joining in 2012; Linda Hines is identified as its chair.5911
WLCA’s main office is at Perry Common Community Hall, which also hosts community activities.310 Its community-led approach is reflected in its role in the estate’s regeneration and in its housing work, which the organisation describes as shaped by local people.34
