UnternehmerTUM stands as Europe's leading startup hub, a permanent innovation center based in Munich that has shaped the continent's entrepreneurial landscape since its founding in 2002. Created by BMW heiress Susanne Klatten as a non-profit organization, it emerged from a comparative study of Stanford University's startup culture conducted by Helmut Schönenberger, who remains its CEO today.
The organization operates as an independent institute affiliated with the Technical University of Munich, though it maintains institutional autonomy. With over 500 employees working across 20 distinct programs, UnternehmerTUM has incubated more than 1,000 startups since inception, including notable successes like FlixMobility and Celonis, Germany's first decacorn valued above 10 billion euros.
UnternehmerTUM's approach spans the full entrepreneurial journey: ideation, product development, prototyping through its MakerSpace workshop, acceleration, and financing via its venture capital fund managing nearly 400 million euros. The organization hosts annual programs serving 5,000 participants, launching roughly 80 to 100 startups yearly. Its strength lies in connecting founders with Munich's robust ecosystem—major corporations like BMW and Airbus, regional universities, venture capitalists, and established entrepreneurs who mentor newcomers.
The hub has earned consecutive recognition from the Financial Times as Europe's best startup center, a distinction reflecting its comprehensive support structure. Beyond Munich, UnternehmerTUM is expanding its model through Germany's "Startup Factories" initiative, partnering with the Federal Ministry to establish similar centers nationwide and position Germany as a leading startup nation.
