Nederlandse Waterschapsbank N.V., known as NWB Bank, is a Dutch national promotional bank serving public-sector organisations. 2 It was established on 5 May 1954 by and for the Netherlands’ water authorities, initially to help finance major investments in flood protection following the country’s water-management challenges. 6 Its activities later expanded to the wider Dutch public sector. 2
The bank provides financing to water authorities, municipalities, provincial authorities and other public-sector entities in the Netherlands. 3 Its customer base also includes government-guaranteed social-housing organisations, healthcare and educational institutions, and organisations working in sustainability. 3 NWB Bank does not provide services to private individuals or companies unrelated to the public sector. 3
NWB Bank raises funds on international money and capital markets and uses its strong credit ratings to offer financing at relatively low rates. 910 Its work includes financing public infrastructure, climate adaptation, water management, renewable-energy projects and more sustainable housing and neighbourhoods across the Netherlands. 9 The bank is supervised directly by the European Central Bank as a significant bank. 2
The registered office and headquarters are at Rooseveltplantsoen 3 in The Hague, Netherlands, and the bank has no branch offices. 3 Ownership is held by Dutch public authorities: water authorities hold 81% of the shares, the Dutch state 17%, and the provinces 2%. 7
Lidwin van Velden is Chair of the Managing Board and Chief Executive Officer; she was appointed in 2010. 5 The current Managing Board also includes Frenk van der Vliet, Chief Commercial Officer; Ard van Eijl, Chief Risk Officer; and Wilma Schouten, Chief Financial Officer. 5 NWB Bank’s geographic scope is national, with its financing focused on the Netherlands. 23
