Milano 2035 – Coalizione per l’Abitare Giovanile is a network founded to address the acute issue of youth housing in Milan and its metropolitan area. Established under the umbrella of the Cariplo Foundation’s Welfare in Action program, the coalition brings together 30 entities—from local associations and cooperatives to universities and public institutions—focused on expanding and coordinating housing opportunities for 18-35 year-olds.
The coalition emerged out of growing concern for the affordability and availability of housing for Milanese youth, a problem made more urgent as rents in the city regularly exceed the means of students and young professionals. As of the most recent data, Milano 2035's network comprises 22 projects with a total offering of approximately 300 beds. These projects include youth cohousing, intergenerational shared housing, residences for individuals with vulnerabilities, and temporary apartments in public housing.
Beyond housing provision, Milano 2035 fosters a collaborative model of living, emphasizing shared spaces and responsibilities. Residents often participate in activities intended to strengthen neighborhood ties, such as voluntary initiatives, repair cafés for reusing household items, and workshops in community spaces. With ongoing initiatives like Carbonia 3—offering 48 apartments to families in crisis and youth—and Ospitalità Solidale—providing reduced rents in exchange for community involvement—the coalition is notable for blending housing support with social engagement.
Milano 2035 continues to advocate for youth housing on the municipal agenda while promoting practical models for solidarity and independent living rooted in local communities.
