Makhno Studio is an architecture and design firm founded in 2003 by Serhii Makhno near Kyiv, Ukraine. It operates with a team of approximately 60 professionals and has realized over 600 projects in 25 countries. The studio’s core activities are architecture, interior design, and product design—particularly ceramics. Its physical office, located in Kyiv, serves as a workspace, showroom, and collection site for Ukrainian ceramics and art.
The studio is recognized for weaving Ukrainian traditions with contemporary global design, especially the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi. This manifests in projects such as private homes, residential complexes, restaurants, offices, and art objects. One notable project is the Vyshto House in Kyiv, which integrates organic materials and traditional Ukrainian techniques within a modern residential design. Another signature is the Shkrub house, an autonomous residence personally designed by Makhno.
Makhno Studio has received international design honors, including the Red Dot Design Award and the Architecture MasterPrize. Its ceramic products range from tiles and furniture to lamps, with several lines exhibited internationally and included in major art and design fairs. In 2020, the Makhno Art Foundation was established to further explore and promote Ukrainian art. The studio’s recent collaborations include art objects featured in global events, such as the Wayne Enterprises Experience in New York in 2024. The firm continues to blend artistry and tradition under challenging national circumstances.
