Latch is a charitable organisation based in Leeds, England, and is registered as a Community Benefit Society with charitable status. 1 It was established in 1989 with grant funding from Leeds City Council to work with homeless volunteers on derelict empty properties. 12
The organisation purchases empty and rundown houses and refurbishes them into quality homes for people who are homeless or in housing need. 12 Its activities are concentrated in the Leeds neighbourhoods of Chapeltown, Harehills and Burley. 1 Once renovated and furnished, the properties are provided as supported housing, combining accommodation with support for residents working towards greater independence. 17
Latch carries out much of the renovation work through its staff, trainees and volunteers. 1 Its programmes also provide construction training and volunteering opportunities, particularly for people seeking skills and experience that may help them move into employment. 7 The organisation’s governing objectives specifically include relieving hardship among homeless people and others in housing need through the renovation and refurbishment of property for their occupation. 11
By 2023, Latch had created more than 107 homes and supported more than 600 people in Leeds over the preceding three decades. 2 During 2023, it had 107 properties available to tenants, housed 213 adults and children, and helped 35 tenants move on to independent living. 2 The organisation completed its 112th home in 2025. 14
James Hartley has served as chief executive since 2011 and oversees the organisation’s strategic and operational work. 13 Nic Crocker is chair of the management committee, with Kat Donegan as vice chair and David Clarke as treasurer. 13
