KARL solidarisch bauen und wohnen eG is a housing cooperative based in Bremen, Germany. It brings together residents who jointly own and manage a multigenerational housing project in the city’s Neues Hulsberg-Viertel, with a stated aim of maintaining affordable housing and fostering solidarity, sustainability and connection with the surrounding neighbourhood.46
The project began with an information event on 8 May 2017. The group later won a city concept procedure for the site in 2019, and the cooperative was entered in the register in January 2021.14 The cooperative’s registered address is Friedrich-Karl-Straße 6, 28205 Bremen.8 Its current legal representatives are Olivia Braun, Kristin Grünewald and Moritz Müller.8 Katrin Tober was one of its two board members at the time of the 2021 land purchase announcement.1
The cooperative acquired the site at Friedrich-Karl-Straße 4–6 for its housing project. Plans announced in 2021 included 29 homes, four of them publicly subsidised, as well as a two-group day-care centre, café, event room and environmental and neighbourhood workshop.1 The completed house became ready for occupancy in December 2023; the cooperative’s website describes it as a self-managed, collectively owned home for about 50 adults and 20 children.46 Its activities and project are centred on Bremen; the available sources describe a local housing initiative rather than an organisation operating nationally or internationally.46
