Impact Finance Belgium (IFB) is an independent, non-profit association based in Brussels, founded in 2022 with the support of eight Belgian organisations including the King Baudouin Foundation, SFPI-FPIM, Incofin, KOIS, Bio Invest, Solifin, the Foundation for Future Generations, and Impact Capital. IFB’s stated goal is to increase the share of investments in Belgium that generate measurable benefits for both people and the environment.
The organisation grew from concerns that Belgium’s impact finance actors were fragmented and operating in silos. Bringing them together, IFB seeks to connect foundations, institutional investors, banks, social enterprises, and traditional financiers to accelerate solutions addressing social and environmental needs. IFB estimates that the current size of Belgium’s impact investing market is between €6 billion and €16 billion, a figure accounting for roughly 1% to 2.5% of the country’s assets under management. IFB aims to double this amount to €30 billion by 2027 and ultimately to reach 10%—up to €80 billion—by 2030.
IFB operates as the Belgian National Advisory Board for the Global Steering Group for Impact Investment, linking Belgium’s activities with European and international networks. Its activities include research publications, convening expert events such as Belgian Impact Week, facilitating capacity-building for social entrepreneurs, and proposing policy initiatives to unlock private and public capital for impact. Recent projects include pilot schemes that leverage state support for environmental and social ventures and initiatives designed to mobilize retail and institutional capital for sustainable investment.
