Habicoop, the French Federation of Housing Cooperatives, is a unique organization that has been pioneering a new approach to housing in France since 2005. Born out of a convergence of ideas from the social economy, associative, and ecological sectors, Habicoop aims to create affordable housing that escapes real estate speculation. The organization is built on the principles of collective ownership, non-speculation, and democracy, where each member has an equal voice.
Habicoop's journey began with the development of the Village Vertical in Villeurbanne, a pilot project that served as a model for future cooperatives. The organization played a crucial role in drafting the legal framework for housing cooperatives in France, which was included in the ALUR law in 2014. Today, Habicoop has transformed into a federation with a strong network of regional structures and partnerships with various institutions and organizations.
The federation currently counts 98 members, including 67 cooperatives, with approximately 900 housing units. These cooperatives are not only about providing affordable housing but also about fostering community and social cohesion. Habicoop's work extends beyond housing, advocating for policy changes at local and national levels to support the development of housing cooperatives. The organization also provides training and resources for its members and the broader public, aiming to spread the concept of cooperative housing across France.
