GWH Wohnungsgesellschaft mbH Hessen, headquartered in Frankfurt am Main, is one of the largest residential real estate companies in Hesse, Germany. Founded in 1924 under the name Gemeinnützige Wohnungsbau-Aktiengesellschaft Hessen, it originated from efforts to combat housing shortages after World War I. Initially, GWH developed its first apartments in Frankfurt, later expanding into other Hessian cities. Today, the company manages nearly 53,000 apartments across central and western Germany, accommodating over 120,000 residents, with the largest concentrations in the Rhine-Main region and Mittelhessen.
GWH is a wholly owned subsidiary of Helaba, the state bank of Hesse and Thuringia. The company’s core business is the management and development of residential properties, but its activities also extend to real estate trading, project development, real estate services, and, since 2019, residential property funds. Historically, GWH’s portfolio includes large post-war housing estates and social housing projects. Examples are the Wiesbaden Schelmengraben and Kassel's Brückenhof, both of which have undergone extensive modernization in recent years.
Current initiatives include the GWH-HessenHaus, a cost-efficient new construction concept, acquisition and modernization of residential portfolios in the Rhine-Main region, and neighborhood-focused services such as new local offices and greening programs in Fulda. GWH employs around 540 people and continues to focus on providing affordable housing solutions, with recent projects addressing the needs of an aging population as well as urban and suburban households.
