fux eG is a cooperative based in Hamburg that develops and operates affordable, self-managed spaces for art, culture, design, education, small businesses and social organisations.2 It was founded in 2013 and registered with the Hamburg Local Court on 23 January 2015.69
The cooperative’s original and principal project is fux Altona, located in the former Viktoria Kaserne in Hamburg-Altona. fux eG purchased the listed building in 2015 and has been responsible for its renovation, conversion and community-oriented operation.3 More than 300 people work at the Altona site, which includes studios, cultural and educational spaces, workshops, businesses and facilities open to the surrounding neighbourhood.611
Since 2023, fux eG has also operated as the umbrella cooperative for fux Berne, based at the former Schule Berne in Hamburg-Berne.2 In May 2023, it signed a 60-year heritable building-rights agreement with the City of Hamburg for the site.4 The planned development is intended to create a self-managed, non-profit-oriented cultural, educational and community centre, developed with local partners including Projekt Schule Berne e.V. and KuBiZ Schule Berne e.V.813
The cooperative uses membership shares from users and investors as part of its financing structure.11 Its governance includes a general assembly, management board and supervisory board, supplemented by a tenants’ committee, house assembly and working groups dealing with communications, acquisition, building development, self-management and energy planning.212
The management board listed by fux eG includes Mehmet Alatur, Eliott Deshusses, Miriam Edding, Alexandra Gramatke, Hilke Mellin, Peter Ott, Uwe Roth, Susanne Scherer, Dieter Söngen and Janna Wieland.9 Its activities are currently concentrated in Hamburg, particularly Altona and Berne.29
