Frugalité heureuse & créative is a French movement focused on architecture and the stewardship of urban and rural territories. It began with a manifesto launched on 18 January 2018 by architect-researcher Dominique Gauzin-Müller, engineer Alain Bornarel and architect and urban planner Philippe Madec. The manifesto advocates reducing the use of energy, materials and technical complexity in construction, while supporting creative, people-centred ways of living and building. 210
The movement is organised through local and thematic groups whose members take the lead on activities. Its initiatives include visits, conferences, workshops, training, publications and exchanges about projects and practices. The association Frugalité heureuse provides the movement with a legal structure, supports coordination and helps fund group activities through donations and membership contributions. It operates under France’s 1901 association law and is governed by a collegial council. 2311
Its work centres on France, where groups and events operate across the country, but the movement also has an international reach: the manifesto has attracted signatories from other countries, and the organisation participates in European-level discussions. Its programme includes national meetings, online events and resources on topics such as rehabilitation and frugal architecture. 61
The association’s registered office is at 9 rue Barbès in Montreuil, France. Alain Bornarel is identified as the association’s president and publication manager in the organisation’s legal notice. 712
