Ekobanken, formally Ekobanken Medlemsbank, is a Swedish member-owned bank headquartered at Skäve Magasin in Järna, within Södertälje Municipality, with an additional office in Stockholm’s Gamla Stan.68 The bank was founded in 1998 and received its banking licence on 30 September that year; Annika Laurén led the organisation at its start.57 Its registered seat is Södertälje.3
The organisation provides banking and financing services organised around ecological, social and cultural criteria.8 Its stated purpose is to direct capital towards activities that contribute social, environmental or cultural value, including businesses and associations undertaking investments or development aligned with those criteria.8 Its products include savings accounts, business and association loans, and “transition loans” for investments connected to ecological, social or cultural change.8
Transparency is a central operating principle: Ekobanken publicly reports the activities and organisations it finances, allowing customers to see how deposited funds are used.8 The bank describes itself as a member bank, with ownership held by members or share owners; its 2024 annual report records 3,026 members.6 The same report states that the bank has two offices, in Järna and Stockholm.6
Ekobanken operates nationally in Sweden, serving private customers as well as businesses and associations.68 Its workforce was reported as 22 people on the bank’s recruitment page, which also describes approximately 3,000 members/share owners and about 7,200 customers.8 Maria Flock Åhlander was identified as chief executive in the bank’s 2023 publication.5
