Die WoGen Wohnprojekte-Genossenschaft e.Gen. is an Austrian cooperative housing developer specialising exclusively in community-based residential projects.212 The cooperative was founded by 11 experts from the shared-building and cooperative-housing sector; its establishment was prepared in 2015 and it was entered in the Austrian company register on 2 March 2016.611 An earlier founding account states that the organisation was formally established on 7 October 2015, while describing it as active from early 2016.12
The organisation’s registered seat and current address are in Eggersdorf bei Graz, Austria.3411 Its governing board comprises Dipl.-Ing. Werner Schwarz and Dipl.-Ing. Walter Schwarz, both of whom have represented the cooperative since 14 June 2024.311
Die WoGen’s stated purpose is to promote collective building and living.3 Its activities include developing affordable, sustainable and inclusive living spaces; commissioning or constructing, renovating and operating buildings; and creating shared facilities, commercial premises and spaces for social, economic and cultural uses.4 The cooperative also provides services connected with group formation, moderation, coaching, training and advice, including support for social and ecological measures in housing management.4
The organisation’s projects are held in the cooperative’s common ownership structure, and its model is intended to support self-organised communities rather than conventional individual ownership.12 Its activities extend across Austria rather than being limited to one municipality; the organisation has described itself as implementing projects throughout the country.12 A prominent example is the WoGen Quartiershaus near Vienna’s Hauptbahnhof, which includes cluster housing designed to combine private living with community facilities.7
