Communa is a Belgian non-profit organisation (ASBL) based in Forest, Brussels, focused on the temporary social use of vacant buildings. 213 It was founded in Brussels in 2013 by five students interested in alternative forms of housing and urban life. 45 The organisation later became formally established as an ASBL in 2017. 6
Communa’s main activity is the legal and temporary occupation of empty buildings, with priority given to accommodation for people experiencing hardship. 1 Its projects also provide spaces for living, play, work, cultural production and community activities. 1 The organisation works with property owners, public authorities and community groups to develop temporary-use projects and has offered this support since 2019. 3
As of 2026, Communa states that it coordinates 10 locations, accommodates approximately 300 people and hosts more than 100 community, non-profit and social-economy projects. 12 Its locations include projects in several Brussels municipalities—such as Forest, Schaerbeek, Auderghem, Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Evere, Koekelberg, Ixelles, Anderlecht and Watermael-Boitsfort—as well as La Veilleuse near Tournai. 112 Its operational scope is therefore primarily local and regional, centred on Brussels with activities elsewhere in Belgium. 112
The published team includes Dimitri Berliner, Maxime Zaït, Camille Testard, Guillaume Kidula, Oscar Bellier, Martina Serangeli and other staff members working across technical, structural, development, places, advocacy, finance and administrative functions. 10 Communa describes its internal management model as shared governance, in which employees participate in operational and strategic management. 1011
