The Bau- und WohnungsVerein Stuttgart (BWV) was founded on 8 March 1866 by Eduard Pfeiffer and other Stuttgart citizens, originally under the name “Verein für das Wohl der arbeitenden Klassen.”1 It is a legal entity established by royal grant in 1883 and has the character of a foundation.1
The organisation’s central purpose is to build and manage rental housing for broad sections of the population.1 It reports a portfolio of almost 5,000 rental homes in Stuttgart, Winnenden and Gerlingen, including homes belonging to the Eduard Pfeiffer Foundation.1 Its annual modernisation and new-build investment volume is around €25 million; the page also reports a balance sheet total of €281.8 million and 70 employees.1 While new homes are not currently under construction, projects are in planning.1
The BWV is supported by 42 corporations, companies and individuals.1 Its listed memberships and affiliations include housing-sector associations, a social-housing development organisation, a climate initiative, and organisations concerned with supported living, heritage and history.1 Its registered seat and main address are in Stuttgart, at Schwarenbergstraße 64.2 The organisation’s current board members are Jürgen Oelschläger and Maike Jutrzinski.2
Its housing activity is concentrated in Stuttgart and nearby towns, while some of its professional and climate-related affiliations operate at broader German or cross-border scale.1
