ASIG Wohngenossenschaft is a non-profit, politically and denominationally independent housing cooperative based in Zurich, Switzerland. Founded in 1943, ASIG’s original purpose was to provide affordable, non-speculative housing, particularly for workers, and it has since grown to become the second largest housing cooperative in Switzerland.
Today, ASIG manages around 2,800 apartments, mainly in the city of Zurich and in seven surrounding municipalities. Its properties span at least 12 developments within Zurich and 8 more in neighboring areas. The cooperative maintains a large and diverse housing stock, addressing the needs of various age groups and family types. Social engagement has become a hallmark of ASIG; the cooperative offers tenants support services such as social counseling, advice on housing in old age, and even deposit savings accounts for members.
A recent example of ASIG's activity is the “Am Glattbogen” project in Zurich-Schwamendingen. This development replaced outdated housing stock with 229 new apartments—doubling the previous units—designed to meet modern social and urban standards. The complex also includes a kindergarten, community spaces, and commercial areas, all built to Minergie energy-efficient standards.
ASIG's activities are focused on regular maintenance, new construction, and holistic site renewals rather than speculative investment. Available apartments are advertised publicly, but membership in the cooperative is only required when signing a rental contract. Waiting times can vary due to high internal demand but the scale and diversity of ASIG’s holdings contribute to its significant role in Zurich’s affordable housing landscape.
