Archis is an Amsterdam-based international non-profit organisation focused on architecture and the city. It describes itself as an architectural think tank and publisher, organising interdisciplinary research with a network of individuals, institutes and knowledge organisations. Its research examines the cultural, social and political meanings of architecture and seeks to identify emerging spatial agendas. Projects can result in publications, events, exhibitions, debates and websites.311
A long-running initiative is Architecture of Peace, which examines architecture’s role in post-conflict settings. The organisation also runs Archis RSVP, a series of public-space interventions, and research on topics including digital technologies and urban change. Its work involves international collaborations and is described by Archis as global in outlook.231
Archis publishes books and, with the Nieuwe Instituut, produces VOLUME, a biannual magazine about architecture and design. The partnership began in 2023; VOLUME has a longer publishing history, with predecessors dating to 1929.23 Archis director Lilet Breddels is an art historian, curator and lecturer who leads the Architecture of Peace project. Other members of the team include editor-in-chief Stephan Petermann and managing editor María Mazzanti.3
Archis does not state a founding year on its About page. Its contact address is in Amsterdam, and the organisation lists events there; the sources available here do not confirm a registered-office designation.111
