W1555 is a Rotterdam-based housing cooperative located in the Oud-Charlois neighborhood at Wolphaertstraat 15-55. The project represents a circular transformation of a pre-war building into 46 sustainable social housing units alongside 5 communal spaces designed for creative communities and social projects.
The housing cooperative's history began in 2004 when a group of young artists squatted the building. These residents organized themselves as the NAC Foundation and worked with property owner Woonstad to develop a recovery plan. In 2015, formal discussions about sustainable renovation commenced, leading to the establishment of the W1555 residents' association.
The renovation was completed in 2022 through collaboration between architectural firm Superuse Studios, residents, and Woonstad. The design transformed pre-war flats into gallery flats with improved access, natural lighting, and efficient floor plans. The project incorporated circular and bio-based materials to minimize environmental impact while preserving the existing structure rather than demolishing it.
W1555 operates as a self-managed cooperative where the association rents the entire complex from Woonstad and then rents individual apartments to members. The residents share a common vision for communal living and support one another. The project includes communal facilities such as a studio, workshop space, and kitchen, creating an integrated community environment.
The cooperative demonstrates how creative transformation can preserve heritage while building sustainable, socially conscious housing. The project has gained recognition for balancing affordability, environmental responsibility, and community values.
