Social Housing Indipendenza is a housing and neighbourhood-redevelopment project in Nesima, a popular neighbourhood of Catania, Italy. Presented in June 2022, it is led by IACP Catania, the city’s public housing institute; Omnia Consulting curated the event at which it was presented. 2
The project covers a 3,447-square-metre site between Corso Indipendenza and Via IV Novembre. Plans call for demolishing an existing building and constructing a 590-square-metre building with 21 social-housing units. 2 The stated aim is to respond to residents’ economic and social needs while creating opportunities for community life. 2
The outdoor space is a central part of the proposal: a green area intended for residents and the wider neighbourhood, with a play area, meeting space and amphitheatre for recreational activities. It is planned as a public space to be donated to the city, supporting socio-educational activities and local gathering. 2
Architect Ida Maria Baratta is identified as responsible for the project on behalf of IACP Catania. She described the proposal as combining housing with shared green space, with the aim of fostering a sustainable community. 2 The planned building is to include photovoltaic panels, water boilers and inverter air-conditioning, and the article describes it as intended to be energy self-sufficient. 2
The project was presented during the Federcasa General Assembly, at the opening of Spazio Sicilia. The available project account gives no construction start or completion date. 2
