Aspern Seestadt is a large-scale urban development project in Vienna, Austria, described by the project site as one of Europe’s most ambitious city-building areas. It is designed to create a mixed district that combines housing, employment, culture, and leisure, with more than 25,000 residents and over 20,000 jobs and training places planned as the area develops.14
The project is located in the 22nd district of Vienna (Donaustadt), in the city’s north-east.34 It has been developed in stages and is still ongoing; external project descriptions note that the initiative began in 2007, with the metro connection opening in 2013, the first residents moving in during 2014, and completion planned for 2028.2 The site has been positioned as a sustainable, future-oriented urban quarter with direct U2 access and a strong focus on liveability and infrastructure.12
The development is associated with Wien 3420 Aspern Development AG as the project agency, while the broader implementation has involved the City of Vienna and related housing and development partners.62 In design and planning terms, external sources also identify Sweco and Gehl among the professional contributors to the district’s urban concept and liveability strategy.25
