Wohnungsgenossenschaft Rheinpreußensiedlung eG is a resident-founded housing cooperative based in Duisburg, Germany. The cooperative was established in 1984 after residents supported self-administration and subsequently took over the long-term management of the settlement. 1711
The organisation manages 403 homes in the Rheinpreußensiedlung, a former mining settlement built as a garden-city development in 1913. 1 Its housing activities also include the Johannenhof, where renting a cooperative home is linked to membership of the organisation.8 The cooperative’s work is therefore concentrated in Duisburg, particularly the Homberg area, rather than operating nationally or across multiple countries. 258
As a member-owned organisation, the cooperative gives members voting rights in general meetings and involves them in decisions concerning the organisation’s principles, housing allocation, gardens and governance. The cooperative states that available financial resources are invested in maintaining and modernising its housing stock rather than in profit maximisation. Its services include personal advice, an emergency service on weekends and public holidays, cooperation with local senior-support providers, and a residents’ newsletter.
The Rheinpreußenhaus serves as a venue for meetings and social and cultural activities, including bingo afternoons, and can also be rented for private family events on available days.12 At 31 December 2025, the cooperative reported 798 members and 1,266 subscribed cooperative shares. 1
